Kuk Early Agricultural Site - Mount Hagen

Kuk Early Agricultural Site covers 116ha of swamp land that has been systematically cultivated since 7,000 and possibly 10,000 years ago. This makes it the earliest evidence for the domestication of plants in Oceania.Crops grown include taro, yam and bananas. Stone tools were found, as well as ditches and drainage channels.The traditional agricultural practice continued until the 1930’s when Europeans arrived in the region.
